Nintendo Switch info and rumor thread
#1
I made one for the Wii U, PS4 and Xbone. It was bound to happen for the NX too!

So what do we know about the NX so far? Not a lot! And yet, we know more than some people think. Iwata left a lot of clues as to his vision during briefings before he passed. This is what we can gather from that so far:

- The NX is an ecosystem, not a singular platform
What this means is that Nintendo is de-emphasizing the box and pushing the concept of a unified ecosystem much like iOS and Android. This doesn't mean that there won't be hardware or the hardware won't have some special features/gimmicks. Just don't be surprised if Nintendo talks more about NintendOS than the platforms that run it.

- The NX is not a hardware hybrid
Nintendo can be unpredictable, but what is predictable is people pushing ideas they would never do. There will be an NX console and there will be an NX handheld but they will not be the same piece of hardware. Nintendo recently consolidated their console and handheld hardware teams into one area for synergy. What this most likely leads to is more uniformity between the platforms (similar OS) and shared architecture; in other words, the NX is not a hardware hybrid but they may be laying the foundation for software hybridization. For an example, imagine that the Mario Kart team, instead of making Mario Kart 9 for the NX handheld and Mario Kart 10 for the console a few years later, makes one massive Mario Kart 9 that runs on both the handheld and the console? Race while you're out and then pick up where you left on when you come home on the TV by transferring your saves via the cloud. Graphical fidelity between the two platforms would appear much like a graphics slider on PC games. Of course, some of this is my own speculation, but the pitfalls of making Smash on two platforms and trying to keep parity reared their ugly heads.

Supporting two separate platforms has become a daunting task for Nintendo and they are seeking to alleviate the droughts by having more games available to both. This could lead to some interesting firsts, like a "real" Pokemon game you can play on your console.

- The NX will have "a completely new concept"
Starting with the DS, Nintendo has always looked to take nascent technology or unorthodox ideas and marry them to their platforms. I admit, I'm at a loss on what this generation's "surprise" will be, and most of the leaks, real or fake, seem more focused on the specs and the controller. Maybe it's another crazy controller? Maybe it's not. Everybody's lips are sealed. Nobody saw the Wii coming. Maybe this will shake the industry up again?

Rumors

I'm breaking down the rumors into hardware and software categories and sticking to rumors that have come from people or places I feel have history or credentials that would put them in a position to leak this kind of stuff.

Hardware

- Has a CPU that's faster than the Xbone's (which is faster than the PS4's).
This was leaked by a NeoGAF user that's apparently also responsible for leaking this information about the Wii U, Wii and Gamecube.

- Will have a freeform display.
This is presumably for the handheld, though the console could also have a controller keeping the screen concept from the Wii U. Nintendo was looking into Sharp freeform displays so it's not really an outrageous rumor.

- Will have rollable trigger buttons.
Nintendo patented this maybe last year. There would be trigger buttons that double as a wheel that can be rolled like a mouse scroll wheel. I can imagine cycling through weapons this way. The drawing in the patent was the basis for the fake controller "leak" from last month.

Software

- MyNintendo will be part of the incoming achievements system.
Instead of useless, shiny trophies and achievements, whatever they call their version will reward you with points that you can use on MyNintendo. Miitomo already has an instance of this and Nintendo patented a system that automatically records screenshots/video of your achievements.

- Pikmin 4 is a launch title.
This is partly speculation from me. Miyamoto abruptly announced last September that not only was Pikmin 4 in development, it was almost finished development. Seven months later and we haven't heard a peep - it wasn't revealed for 3DS or Wii U. It would seem strange to announce an NX game that early, but Pikmin 3 was supposed to be a Wii U launch title and they do want to avoid the drought the Wii U suffered almost immediately after launch. I don't think it's that out of the realm to think that they're sitting on Pikmin 4 and maybe a few other games so they'll have a flexible release schedule.

- Smash Bros NX is a launch title.
There's been rampant speculation that, due to the dual nature of Smash 4, there would be an "Ultimate" rerelease collecting all the DLC and separate features between both games into one massive, definitive version. Namco seemingly let the cat out of the bag themselves. Smash 3DS and Smash U are known internally as Smash 4 and 5, respectively. Two years ago, Namco put up a job posting recruiting for development on "Smash Bros 6," which was expected to launch in 2015. Perhaps the NX was targeting 2015 once upon a time, but what we do know is that "Smash 6" has yet to manifest, and almost every rumor that mentions it says it's launching with the NX.

To add to software, Rumor going around is that there will be 5-6 "remastered" games launching with the system, Smash Bros being one of them, the others rumored has been 'Zelda U' which will be released similar to how Twilight Princess was done. Also we might be seeing ports of Xenoblade X, Splatoon and Super Mario Maker.

I have to admit ports seem a little odd to me for this system, I can't see the graphics improving all that much and I can't imagine Nintendo not having backwards compatibility with the WiiU. Super Mario Maker makes the least amount of scene since I can't see how more power could improve this game. At least with the other games we could see better frame rates and higher field of vision.

A bunch of rumors came out today about it being a handheld/console hybrid thing. Eurogamer is pretty much running with it as being true. Digital foundry breaks it down: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C6cTt_nxTWo

After a lot of people got burned by that fake controller I'm surprised people are eating this up.

So Destructoid reported on a rumor about Nintendo picking up Beyond Good and Evil 2 up as an exclusive a la Bayonetta 2 for the NX. There was a lot of skepticism over that but Laura Kate Dale, who broke the news in the first place, just doubled down on that rumor and explained a bit more about the game:
http://letsplayvideogames.com/2016/10/re...ll-sequel/

Quote:In the wake of the news that a new Beyond Good & Evil game is in pre-development at Ubisoft with Michel Ancel heading up the project, Let’s Play Video Games has learned of a few details regarding the planned direction of the much-anticipated new entry in the franchise.

As many have noted since Ancel’s Instagram reveal for the game, neither Ubisoft or Ancel are referring to the game as Beyond Good & Evil 2. Lets Play Video Games has been informed by a source familiar with negotiations on the project that the game is planned to be more of a standalone reboot than a traditional sequel.

According to our source, the currently planned direction for the game is that it will partially retell Jade’s origin tale from Beyond Good & Evil, flesh out Peyj’s backstory, then continue to extrapolate on the ending of the original game. The intention is that players who have not played the original will be able to jump into the new game, which will feature a subtitle rather than a number at the end of its title, and understand both who Jade is and what drives Pey’j. It also seeks to provide closure to fans of the original wondering what the cliffhanger at the end meant for the series’ ongoing plot.

While many existing fans of the series may be upset about the new game not being a direct sequel, the idea of modernising the original tale and fleshing out the world while continuing the story beyond where it once ended offers the series a better chance of an ongoing life than it previously had.

Additionally, we have learned from a separate source that there are plans for a new CG trailer for the game to be shown alongside the NX reveal. Much like the 2008 trailer, this is planned to be a tone piece rather than a plot or gameplay reveal, and will be used to announce its NX exclusivity. The game is currently aiming for a Summer 2018 release window, according to sources at Ubisoft.

I am all for BG&E being a NX exclusive. Smile
And I'm all for it being a remake/sequel, it's been waaaaay to long for it to be just a sequel, it's been pretty much off the shelves (and it the clearance bin) since 2005 and the last we saw and really fan-fair was back in 2011 when they did the HD upgrade for PS3 and 360. 15 years is to long for a sequel.

The NX has been officially shown off, now its the Nintendo Switch. I'm ok with the name, kind of happy to see the end of the "Wii".

- I like the ability to play as a home console and then convert it to a handheld. What the WiiU should have been like.

- No word on how powerful the system is, with every thing being inside the little screen (like a iPad) I can't see it being super powerful (XBO or PS4) but then again it could be we don't know the price point yet.

- No more discs, we're back to cartridges, no word on how big they are, but I'm assuming at least 32+GB. I hope the system has some serious built in flash storage and the ability to expand it with SD cards.

- I like how the controller can be solo or attached to the screen, and how it's now using the Xbox/GameCube control stick layout.

- No word on touch screen or if the console screen can be used at the same time as the TV, which makes it questionable about BC with WiiU and DS/3DS games.

- No word on motion controls so questionable about BC with Wii Games.

- Looks like their will be local wireless lan play (similar to the DS and 3DS)

- We saw a New Mario game, Skyrim: DE, Splatoon, Mario Kart, Zelda and NBA '17 game.

- There is a bunch of 3rd parties on board, but then again so were they with the WiiU.

Really glad we finally got to see the thing but I can't wait for a software showcase. A unified Nintendo development environment should have an amazing library. A couple of rumblings I've heard since the reveal:

- It's not quite Xbone in power but the hardware is strong enough to run all the modern engines. The rumors said that it's easy to port to, so it's not so much a matter of if it can run something but rather if the developer is assed enough to make it happen. This is not going to be a Wii U/3DS situation where 3rd party engines don't work (and UE4 was already confirmed).

- Some third party PS4 titles are "moving" to Switch. It's unknown if this is in reference to ports or outright exclusivity.

- Nintendo is mum on the touchscreen functionality but rumors say it supports multitouch.

- There are more controller "attachments" but Nintendo is being quiet so as to focus first and foremost on getting the Switch messaging right. I imagine we could see motion controllers or Gamecube-esque add on pieces (for Smash) somewhere down the line. It would be a good way to facilitate VC backwards compatibility for old platforms with functionalities the default controls don't support or translate well to.
